Vegan comfort food, Southern-style
Being vegan in the South isn’t easy, and one of the hardest examples of “going vegan” is the ubiquitous BBQ-culture. After all, barbecue is comfort food around here, and well, Terry Sargent has given Southern vegan a reason to rejoice and fire up the grill just in time for summer! There are so many recipes in this book that I hardly know where to begin. Sargent takes you on a culinary journey through the South, but everything is vegan so you can enjoy your barbecue without feeling guilty. Not to mention the recipes are so hearty and mouth-watering that even the most die-hard carnivore will be asking for a bite. Covering everything from spices, rubs, and sauces to sandwiches and “meaty” main courses to sweets and drinks, Vegan Barbecue has something for everyone–even the little ones! (Carrot “hotdogs”…mmm, sooo good!)Whether you’re an established vegan, a newbie, or just looking to try a few meatless dishes to see what all the fuss is about, Vegan Barbecue is sure to please. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a grill to light.

Great vegan recipes.
I’ve had the opportunity to try Terry Sargeant’s food in person and it is worth all the hype.

Great looking vegan cookbook
How much you like this cookbook will greatly depend on what you want to get from it. The cookbook is visually pleasing, with full-color, full-page pictures every couple of pages. There are 8 different sections for spices and marinades, salads, sandwiches, “meaty mains”, veggies, cheesy things, fruits and sweets, and drinks. The recipes range from the simple, like infused salts made in the microwave and a drunken beer cheese that has only two steps, to more the complex, like smoked beer and fennel bratwurst. You could easily impress your friends and family by creating a vegan menu with the recipes in the book. The writer’s professional background shines through, as many of the recipes look like something that would be on a restaurant menu. This also means that there’s not a lot of extra fluff in the book. By that I mean that there’s not a lot of explainers or sidenotes. The instructions for recipes are pretty straightforward. That can be good or bad depending on your opinion. One thing to note about the cookbook is that a good chunk of the recipes utilizes a smoker, and alternative methods of cooking are not usually provided. If you don’t have a smoker the cookbook might not be as worth it, although there are still good-looking recipes that don’t require a smoker. The best thing about this book is that it is an all-vegan cookbook that has recipes that anyone might want to make and enjoy. There are options for those wanting a nice dinner at home and those wanting something for a get-together with friends. While this book might not be for everyone, it is still a great book for someone craving some smoky plant-based food.

Too Much Reference to Meat and Seafood
Iâm a vegetarian. I love bbq tofu. I was hoping to learn about bbq to make a quality bbq tofu dinner. But these recipes are complex and require ingredients I will never have in my cabinet. I donât have a smoker for the Mac n cheese recipe. This book is not for me⦠I donât want my food to taste like bacon, beef, lobster, crab cakes â¦.

How is this vegan?
Seriously, the TVP melt shown on the sample pages has Swiss cheese, mayonnaise, and American cheese. None of which are vegan. I have a problem with this calling itself vegan.

Awesome vegan BBQ cookbook!
Iâve been vegan more than 20 years, love to cook, and love to try new vegan foods. I primarily cook/eat Asian foods, so Southern BBQ is a new thing for me. The pictures are very appetizing, and so far Iâve made 15 recipes (at least one from every category except drinks) and have enjoyed everything, while my vegan family (of all different taste preferences) have liked most things. My photographs are: (Picture 1) Smoked Chickân Alfredo served with Toasted Broccoli Salad, (Picture 2) Smoked TVP Meatball Marinara (sans cheese) over a basic spaghetti with store-bought marinara, (Picture 3) Smoked VBQ Meatless Loaf served with VBQ Green Beans and Smoked Corn & Potato Hash, and (Picture 4) Smoked Jambalaya with Smoked Mac n Cheese. My favorite recipe so far has been the Smoked Hot Mexican Chocolate! Also, the Smoked Chickân Alfredo has been the closest to my memory of what Alfredo should taste like, and paired really well with the broccoli salad! Another favorite of the whole family was the Smoked Mexican Corn Salad, which we paired with my own enchilada recipe. My kids loved the Smoked Mac & Cheese (and they have not grown up with anything like that, so I wasnât sure if theyâd like it!). We made Vegan Pasta Bolognese for non-vegan guests, and everyone loved it!As I was cooking I found a few places where more information was needed, or something in the recipe seemed off. For example, the Meatloaf calls for 1/4 cup minced garlic (in addition to dried garlic powder). This seemed like a lot, so I put in four minced cloves and had a great outcome with that adjustment. Meanwhile, in the recipe for the BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich, the recipe itself mentions Creole Sauce, while the ingredients list calls for Smoky Vidalia VBQ Sauce. I assume either sauce would work, but itâs not clear which is intended (my guess is on the Creole). And on the topic of the Smoky Vidalia VBQ Sauce, mine turned out chunky due to the onions, while the pictures show a smooth sauce. Iâm pretty sure the recipe forgot to tell me to put it in the blender after cooking. There were a couple other things, but all have been minor.THINGS TO KNOW:-This is BBQ, which naturally means the meatier and comfort food side of vegan (tempeh bacon, home-made seiten, vegan mayo, vegan cheese, vegan butter, oil, etc.). This cookbook is not for those who are strictly health-based without some modifications.-On a similar note, expect to buy ingredients such as: TVP, vital wheat gluten, various vegan meat and dairy substitutes, nutritional yeast, liquid smoke, and Worcestershire sauce. Some of these ingredients can be left out here and there, while others are staples. Iâm not able to get some of these ingredients where I am, and made adjustments. For example, I can get tempeh but not tempeh bacon, so I made my own using the bacon marinade included in the book.-Some recipes use honey. If you are a vegan offended by honey choose bee-free honey or agave, or find a cookbook that doesnât trigger you.-Some of the recipes use alcohol. I know thatâs not everyoneâs preference. (None of the items Iâve made so far include alcohol.)-Having a smoker is ideal for the full flavor profile of many of these recipes, but I donât have a BBQ and still enjoyed the outcome from my stovetop and oven. Modifying smoker recipes may require some knowledge of cooking as cooking times may need to be adjusted/altered.

Iâm vegan and wanted to try some different BBQ recipes, so youâd think I couldnât go far wrong buying âVegan Barbecueâ. Having skimmed through the book I have struggled finding a single actual BBQ dish. The recipes do look nice but just donât buy the book as I did if you want actual BBQ recipes.
